The Mineral Industry Research Organisation (MIRO) is a leading international collaborative research and technological development (RTD) facilitator and provider of project management services to the minerals and related industries. MIRO provides it’s members with extensive resources aimed at delivering experience and capability in project development, funding and management, technology transfer, industry networking and dissemination. MIRO has much experience in R&D related to: mineral exploration, mining and mineral extraction, mineral processing, environmental technologies, waste management, new materials, land reclamation and information technology.

An emphasis on innovative research and investment in high-quality facilities and first-rate infrastructure means that no fewer than 35 departments are rated internationally or nationally 'excellent'. The School of Civil Engineering is world class in both teaching and research which is recognised for its international standing and strong links to industry. Solid waste management is a key research area.

BRE provides a complete range of consultancy, testing and commissioned research services, covering all aspects of the built environment and associated industries. BRE is owned by the BRE Trust, a registered charity with a mission to champion excellence and innovation in the built environment. BRE’s area of expertise include materials and product assessments and all aspects of waste management related to the construction sector. BRE provides tools, standards, specifications and strategies to improve resource efficiency. This includes the management of the SMARTWaste and BREMAP system.

Akristos are creating novel markets for industrial waste products by utilising them as alternative raw materials via the brick, aggregate, cement and other industries, thereby conserving natural mineral resources. By developing industrial symbiosis networks within and between industry sectors, Akristos are developing ecological and economic "win-win" solutions. Akristos has a number of unique routes to market, either through its supply of materials into industry or through a number of strategic partnerships.

NISP is an innovative business opportunity programme funded through Government that delivers bottom line benefits for their members whilst generating positive outcomes for the environment and society. Operating at the forefront of industrial symbiosis thinking and practice, the programme helps companies take a fresh look at their resources.

The project is funded by the Waste and Resources Evidence Programme (WREP) which has an aim to deliver a robust sustainable waste and resources management evidence base for informed policy development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation, which incorporates an effective mechanism for assembling, analysing and communicating outputs.
