SMARTStart™

SMARTStart™ is a waste auditing tool that will allow you to easily begin the process of evaluating waste management across all of your company's sites aiding in the application of the sustainable waste management concept. It is a benchmarking and monitoring tool that allows each site to enter data regarding the materials that leave their site as waste. As containers leave the site they are visually assessed and the percentage volume of 12 waste groups are recorded.

This data is then entered into your project page accessed through the SMARTStart™ homepage. Each company will be provided with their own individual and secure homepage following registration. This will then generate an Environmental Performance Indicator (EPI) for your individual sites and on a company-wide basis. The site or company EPI can then be compared against BRE national averages to see how well you are performing compared to the rest of the industry. It can also be used to effectively monitor any changes in waste reduction and recovery that are put in place on-site, providing information that can be of benefit to your whole organisation.

The SMARTStart™ tool gives you a greater understanding of the amounts and types of waste leaving your sites. It gives you an overall picture of the current waste situation within your company. Knowing the amount of waste your company produces will give you foresight to realise that immediate action has to be taken in order to avoid increasing disposal costs due to rising landfill tax (currently £14 increasing to £35 per tonne in 2013). This foresight contributes to compliance with increasing waste legislations such as the Landfill Directive and Producer Responsibility. All BRE waste minimisation workshop attendees agree that sustainable waste management should be implemented at the earliest stage possible.

Your company can easily analyse SMARTStart™ data. A quarterly report is recommended especially if a waste reduction scheme has been implemented. Quarterly reports can be created by printing out your SMARTStart™ data on a monthly basis, therefore keeping a record of the changing trends and quantities of waste. Quarterly reports can help monitor success or failure of any schemes put in place. Stress has to be put on the fact that data collection alone will not improve waste management.

Knowing the types and amounts of waste you produce is not enough. In order to apply the concept of sustainable waste management, you will want to start reducing the waste being generated on-site. To do this you need greater understanding about which specific materials are being wasted, particular work packages and operations on-site that are most wasteful and what is causing these inefficiencies. The in depth version of the waste auditing tool SMARTAudit™ can take you from simply benchmarking your waste (SMARTStart™) onto developing advised and practical site waste management plans.
